Preparations have already begun for a referendum that will take place in two years time to decide whether Sudan should split in two.

The oil-rich south is seeking autonomy from the Khartoum government in the north.

Southerners will have the chance to vote for secession in the referendum but there is confusion over the rights of those who fled to the north during the country’s 22-year civil war.

They are being told they will have to return home if they want to vote.

Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Vall reports from Khartoum.

Al Jazeera English: Court redefines borders of disputed Abyei region

The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague has redefined the borders of the disputed oil region of Abyei.

Both the ruling National Congress Party and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement who govern the semi-autonomous region of southern Sudan have said they will accept the decision.

ICC Arrest Warrant for President Bashir ‘will not bring peace to Sudan’

A senior advisor to Sudan’s President has said that the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for President for Omar al-Bashir will not bring peace to Sudan.

This series by Al Jazeera’s reporter Mohammed Vall profiles the oil rich region of Abyei on the border of north and southern Sudan.

In January 2011 the region will vote on whether it wishes to join the south should southern Sudan choose to succeed in a referendum due to held at the same time.

This has led to a power struggle between ruling parties of Sudan and the peoples who see the land as their own.
